India adventure - Your new desert friend

Jaisalmer Camel Safari

Route: Jaisalmer - Thar Desert - Jaisalmer

A real India adventure, this camel safari in Jaisalmer is definitely an eye-opener. Camels are odd creatures with no manners. They burp, pass wind and they rarely follow orders. However, after a few hours on your camel during this India adventure through the desert, you might actually become friends, and most certainly enjoy the ride. Perhaps, you'll even manage to train him, or her, to sit down with a couple of sharp tugs on the reins (but don't count on it).

The region surrounding Jaisalmer is full of magnificent sand dunes, temples and tiny Thar villages. The best way to get around this area is on top of your very own plodding, lazy-eyed camel. You'll feel like you're on a real India adventure as you set up camp to sleep in a tent under desert skies- certainly an experience you won’t forget in a hurry on your India trip.

Days 1 and 2: Jaisalmer - Thar Desert - Jaisalmer

You’ll begin the first day of your India adventure with a jeep transfer to the spot where your camel will be waiting for you. During your India trip, you’ll be accompanied by a couple of local camel drivers. Members of this caste have been travelling with these strange animals for many generations. The camel will kneel for you to climb on, and when it stands up you'll find that you’re suddenly perched up pretty high. Together with your camel driver, you’ll head off on your India adventure into the huge expanse of the desert. On the first day of this India trip, you’ll ride for around 2-3 hours, passing through traditional nomadic villages. Here, you’ll see how the local people manage to live in the desert. You’ll then begin plodding once again though bare plain, which will gradually turn into rolling sand dunes. The journey today ends with your camel drivers setting up camp, where your meals will be provided and you’ll round off your India adventure with a night spent under the twinkling desert stars.

India adventure - Taking a break
During this India trip through the desert, you will sleep in your own tent that will be pitched for you that evening. You'll be provided with simple bedding, so you’ll only need to bring along a small rucksack with some clothing and toiletries. It is also a good idea to bring any essentials such as toilet paper and your own drinking water as there are no facilities - you really are right out in the desert!

The next day, you'll make an early start as your India adventure draws to a close. In the mornings, the clear desert can be pretty cold but, within an hour, temperatures will soar. At certain times of the year, the difference in temperatures in a single day can be 50 degrees. You’ll ride for 2-3 hours this morning, passing traditional desert villages with clay huts. Eventually, you’ll end up on the outskirts of Jaisalmer, where this India adventure ends and you’ll say a fond farewell to your camel and driver. After this, you’ll be taken back to Jaisalmer to continue with your India trip.
