Charity Project in South IndiaIndia Travel Plan supports small-scale projects in villages on the coast in Tamil Nadu. We recently supported a Tsunami project in a local fishing village, which has been successfully completed. The fishing boats have now been repaired, the fishing nets have been newly knotted, and the fishermen have been able to resume their daily routine again. Our current project involves the village of Vada Kadumbadi, which is in the countryside, near the coastal town of Mamallapuram and the city of Chennai. Here, we are helping to repair and partially rebuild a primary school. We have not yet raised enough money to complete the work, so any donations would be very welcome indeed. This is a poor region with few facilities and the people here lead simple lives. The adults in the village hope that their children will have enough education to give them new, exciting possibilities. |

The school teaches 120 children who all come from surrounding villages to attend their primary classes. The facilities are basic. There are no desks or chairs and children sit on the ground during their lessons. There are only four classrooms available, so some children are taught outside and the building itself is in urgent need of renovation. The work that we are currently financing includes: 1. Repairing cracks and repainting of the school building 2. Furnishing the classrooms with desks, chairs, etc. 3. Constructing a toilet 4. Building two extra classrooms 5. Making a playground area for the children 6. Constructing a wall around the school to keep the cattle out. |

Our agent in Chennai and Mamallapuram supports and monitors all of the aid that we donate to the project. If your Travel Plan takes you to Mamallapuram, you are welcome to visit the school and take a look at how the project is coming along. You can even roll up your sleeves and help - there’s always plenty to do. Feel free to lend a helping hand with some painting, light carpentry or bricklaying. The children will really enjoy your visit, and you'll give them a great chance to practice their English. They will be thrilled if you join in with a football matches or any of their other games. You can contribute to the project by stating on your booking form that you would like to contribute £5 to this project. We'll add the sum to your invoice and ensure that it goes directly to the project in India. If you would prefer to keep your holiday in India separate from any charity donations, it really is no problem at all. You are under no moral obligation whatsoever. |
